Our Out of the Vault series dives deep into our archives to give you an exclusive look through more than 175 years of innovation and a commitment to those linked to the land.
In our first video, Wade Ellett, our digital archivist, chronicles the history of Fanggs, an exclusive bucket tooth design. First inspired by children digging in a sandbox, Fanggs are still delivering outstanding performance to John Deere construction customers today.
In December 1990, at a dealer expo in Phoenix, John Deere introduced 13 different bucket tooth models using the Fanggs design. Ron Fellner’s original prototype for Fanggs resembled a duck’s bill, which earned him the nickname “The Mad Mallard.” His wife made him a hat with the Fanggs name on it and two mallard feathers in the brim, and it became his calling card at Fanggs events.
