When John Deere Classic fans mention Zach Johnson, some reminisce about his sudden-death bunker shot to win in 2012. But for many others, the conversation revolves around Johnson’s roots and his mission of Kids on Course.
Less than 100 miles from TPC Deere Run, Johnson’s golf story began in Cedar Rapids, IA. With the encouragement of his parents, Johnson played every team sport he could, thanks to the four seasons of the Midwest. “My story is one that I didn’t go out there and say this is what I wanted to do, golf picked me,” said Johnson.
Playing in the John Deere Classic
Despite his success on the PGA Tour, Zach Johnson ensures the John Deere Classic remains on his schedule year after year. He credits The Classic?as the place that believed in him when he had no status. He calls the experience invaluable, saying it provided him the opportunity to tee off with the best in the world at a time when he was still trying to break through.
Today, Johnson’s commitment to the John Deere Classic is year round. He describes himself as an ambassador for the tournament. And even more, when he steps onto TPC Deere Run, he does so as a member of the PGA Tour, as a John Deere Classic board member, and with John Deere as one of his sponsors.
More Than a Logo on a Golf Bag
In 2014, John Deere announced a corporate sponsorship of Zach Johnson. The arrangement further strengthens Deere’s commitment to golf by building on its role as a title sponsor of a PGA TOUR event and as the TOUR’s official supplier of golf course equipment.
But for Johnson, the sponsorship is more than the logo on his golf bag. It’s unique in that it blends two value systems to support children in the classroom. Johnson is proud of the mission of the Zach Johnson Foundation and thanks?his sponsorship with John Deere for the success of the program.
